Home and Contents Insurance
Home insurance protects your property and its contents against fire, water damage, theft, earthquake and other perils. It goes well beyond DASK, which covers only earthquake damage to the building.

Most household losses are not caused by earthquakes but by everyday events: a burst pipe, water seeping from a neighbouring flat, a kitchen fire or a burglary. DASK covers only structural earthquake damage, and only up to a capped amount. Home insurance protects both the building and your belongings across a far broader range of risks.
The policy is built on two sums insured: the building value (rebuild cost based on area and construction type) and the contents value (appliances, furniture, electronics and personal effects). Under-declaring either leads to proportional settlement at claim time, meaning the loss is not fully paid. Getting these values right is the single most important step.
Tenants can also take out home insurance. In that case the building is the landlord's responsibility and the tenant insures their own contents plus liability for damage caused to neighbours. Glass breakage, electronic equipment, lock replacement after burglary and 24/7 home assistance can be added.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need home insurance if I already have DASK?
Yes. DASK covers only earthquake damage to the building up to a capped limit — not your contents, fire, water damage or theft.
Can tenants buy home insurance?
Yes. A tenant policy focuses on contents cover and liability for damage caused to neighbouring properties.
How should I calculate my contents value?
Add up the current replacement cost of everything in your home. Under-declaring results in proportional claim settlement.
Is water damage from a neighbour covered?
Yes, under internal water cover. If the neighbour is at fault, the insurer handles the recovery process itself.
