Hull cover protects the vessel's structure, machinery and equipment. Scope depends on the navigation area (cabotage, Mediterranean, worldwide), the age and construction material of the vessel and its use — private, commercial or charter. A separate lay-up cover is arranged for boats stored ashore over winter.

Liability exposure at sea is more complex than on land. Collision with other vessels, damage to marina facilities, passenger injury and pollution from fuel leakage can lead to substantial claims. P&I (Protection & Indemnity) cover addresses these liabilities and is usually a condition of marina berthing.

Standard private-use policies do not apply to vessels chartered commercially. Failing to declare charter activity can void cover entirely at claim time. Crew liability and passenger personal accident benefits must be structured separately in such policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is boat insurance compulsory?

Hull cover is not compulsory, but most marinas require third party liability cover as a condition of berthing.

What if I do not declare charter use?

Cover can be declined at claim time. Commercial charter activity must always be stated in the policy.

Is my boat covered while ashore in winter?

Yes, when lay-up cover is added. Lifting and launching operations can also be included.

What does navigation area mean?

The geographic area where cover applies — cabotage, Eastern Mediterranean or worldwide — and it directly affects the premium.
